Mamaroneck rebuilds, marks Katrina anniversary
Residents in Mamaroneck, still recovering from the April nor?easter that flooded the village, took time out Wednesday to mark the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.Katrina battered Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, killing hundreds of people and flooded nearly 80 percent of New Orleans. While progress has been made, huge areas of the city remain in shambles and many still need help.
Habitat for Humanity is currently working on Howard Avenue in Mamaroneck. The organization held a memorial service as part of a recommitment to help the victims of Katrina and continue its reconstruction work in the village.
Many in Westchester lost everything to massive flooding that hit the region four months ago. That nor?easter came on the heels of another storm that flooded the region. Mamaroneck was one of the hardest hit areas after two days of rain that destroyed homes and businesses. Bus loads of volunteers continue to come to Mamaroneck to help the residents rebuild their homes.
