A Mamaroneck Police Department veteran is accused of taking $23,400 from an evidence room locker.Detective Joseph Comblo has not been charged with any crime, but he could face departmental conduct violations in the case. The money was stolen Jan. 10. There was no answer Monday at the detective's home.

Comblo, who is due to retire in April, submitted his retirement papers this month after the money went missing. He was then suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

The detective joined the force in 1983 and has even served as a youth officer, making the news hard for some residents to swallow. "We put our trust in the police department," said Joann Gallello, of Mamaroneck. "It's a shame he's been a veteran for so long, and what can you do?"

The detective has until March 31 to respond to the accusations before the Village Board of Trustees.

Village police and the district attorney said they cannot comment on the ongoing investigation. However, PBA President David Casterella told News 12 Westchester by phone that, "Right now, the association is still behind Detective Comblo. They haven't given us any evidence that he stole the money." He also added that if a crime was committed, the PBA will support the evidence, not Comblo.
