The decision in a lawsuit filed against the Village of Mamaroneck by day laborers now rests in a judge?s hands after the trial wrapped up Friday in White Plains.
The five-day trial dealt with whether six immigrants? 14th Amendment rights were violated by the closure of a day laborer work site at Columbus Park in February. The plaintiffs argued that police also ticketed contractors who tried to hire immigrants. The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund filed the suit, saying the immigrants were not wrong to seek employment.
Mayor Philip Trifiletti (R-Mamaroneck) took the stand Friday, denying that he ordered police to target Latinos. The judge is expected to announce a decision after September 29.
