Malls boost security amid holiday rush
Shoppers searching for the hottest deals during the extended Thanksgiving weekend will notice an added security presence.
The Westchester mall in White Plains was bustling as eager shoppers started their holiday blitz on Black Friday. Despite the recent attacks overseas and a global terror alert, many said they took advantage of the savings while throwing caution to the wind.
"I think about it all the time, but just have to move forward," said shopper Pip Porter.
Anti-terror expert Sal Lifrieri told News 12 that malls are both the largest and "softest" targets for an attack. The former director of security and intelligence for ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says people should not assume that major cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles are prime targets for terrorists.
He added that those committing the acts of terror are looking for global recognition, and would have no qualms about striking in a smaller location.
One person working in security at The Westchester says the mall did beef up its security for the weekend, but would not provide further details.
