A mall in Yorktown had to be evacuated Thursday after some trash bags in a hallway caught fire.
The fire broke out at Jefferson Valley Mall around 8:15 a.m. and was mostly confined to plastic bags of trash in a hallway but produced a lot of smoke. Workers and customers arriving at the mall were forced to stand around in the parking lot while police and firefighters went through the building.
The mall was reopened just after 10 a.m., which is normal opening time for the stores. Some stores suffered smoke and water damage. Firefighters say the fire is suspicious.
