A Suffolk County middle school teacher is filing a $3 million lawsuit after getting fired from the South Country School District over a selfie.
Lauren Miranda, a math teacher at Bellport Middle School, was recently let go when a topless photo she sent to another teacher she was dating circulated around the district.
Miranda, 25, says a student somehow got hold of the photo, which was taken over two years ago, and shared it. She says she doesn't know how a student was able to get a copy of the photo.
Miranda says the district superintendent told her about the photo being circulated. She says she was fired several months later.
John Ray, her attorney, says district’s action was discrimination.
Miranda says she's filing a gender discrimination lawsuit against the district. Through her attorney, she says she would be willing to drop the lawsuit if she was re-instated but the superintendent told her that wasn't going to happen.
She says the district's actions were unjust, and the photo was meant to be private. Miranda says she's looking for another teaching job in another school district.
The school district superintendent tells News 12, "The district does not comment on active litigation."
