The Long Island Rail Road's Double Track Project in Suffolk County has been completed ahead of schedule.
The project includes a 13-mile stretch of second track from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma. State officials say the work was finished a year early and should help with railroad delays.
"We are righting the wrongs of the past," says New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The project also allows for more eastbound reverse-commute service for riders.
"I think it'll be amazing be able to move trains back and forth, because right now trains can only move in one direction during rush hour," says John Sakowitz, of Dix Hills.
The LIRR built two new platforms that have snow-melting systems at the Wyandanch train station. It also added a new pedestrian overpass with elevators, in addition to a new station house.
The Double Track is just one of many projects in the state's $6.6 billion investment in improving the LIRR.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that by finishing the Double Track a year early, the LIRR can focus on other projects like the East Side Access and the Main Line Third Track.
