Legislators nix New Rochelle housing project
A controversial housing project in New Rochelle is now in a state of limbo and may never get built.
The 25-unit rental building was backed by a new Westchester program pitched by County Executive Andy Spano called the Westchester Housing Land Trust. The land for the building would be placed in the land trust agency for development.
However, the Westchester Board of Legislators voted down a 1.9 million bond issue that would have financed the building. Many residents also opposed the building, saying it would change the neighborhood and cause traffic problems.
Spano has now agreed to revamp plans for the proposed Westchester Housing Land Trust and give lawmakers more input into how it will be run. As for the housing project on Clinton Avenue, some legislators say it may never get built.
