It will soon be illegal for anyone under the age of 18 in Westchester County to buy cough syrup. The Legislature unanimously passed Anthony's Law, which is named after 87-year-old Anthony Viero, of Yonkers. Viero was killed last year in a head-on crash with 21-year-old Mohd Shreiqein. At the time of the crash, Shreiqein was high on cough medicine. The drugs contain the ingredient DXM, which can cause hallucinations if taken in large quantities. It can also be mixed with alcohol and other drugs to enhance its effect. The medicines will now have to be placed behind a counter and a person must show ID before purchasing them. County Executive Andy Spano still needs to sign the bill into law.
