Westchester County Executive George Latimer announced Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 cases are growing. There are more than 4,700 in the county.
New Rochelle has the most cases, but officials say the rise has slowed down due to containment and social distancing.
Greenburgh, Mount Vernon and White Plains also have some of the higher numbers within Westchester. Latimer says that more resources will be needed as the county closes in on 5,000 cases.
Hospitals across the state are being asked to expand their capacity by at least 50%. That's why Westchester County Center is currently being fitted for hospital beds. They will likely be used within the next several weeks to accommodate overflow patients.
Latimer says the region has not seen the front end of the COVID-19 surge yet, and it’s not clear how high it will go or how long it will last.
