Lack of funding puts day laborer site in jeopardy
The volunteers who run a day laborer site in New Rochelle say they no longer have the resources to run it.
The Union Avenue site is closed for the winter, but those who run it say it may not reopen in the spring. Sister Eileen Fane, of the Ursuline Outreach Center, helped found the site four years ago. Fane says the site has become too big for her all-volunteer staff to run. Fane also says she is running out of funds.
New Rochelle City Councilman Roberto Lopez, who is finishing up his term, also helps run the site. He says the city should now take the lead in the operations.
New Rochelle?s City Manager Chuck Strome says the city will financially back any not-for-profit organization that steps up to fill the void. City officials say they are committed to getting the site reopened in the spring, but they aren?t certain how they will do it.
