The Department of Labor is cracking down on Brooklyn poultry markets it says maintain illegal labor practices.

According to labor officials, Al-Noor Poultry Market owes its employees $134,696. The market's owners allegedly paid its employees as little as $5 an hour, despite that New York state's mandatory minimum wage is set at $7.15. Al-Noor's owners also had some employees work 12-hour days, seven days a week and did not pay them overtime, the department says.

Similar allegations were raised against 34 Vivero, another Brooklyn poultry market. The Department of Labor says 34 Vivero owes its employees $34,000.

The labor department says it will force the owners to pay all that they owe, and they could also face major fines.

Neither market's owners would comment for this story.
