Labor Day barbecue memorializes teen killed in crash
Relatives and friends gathered at a New Rochelle Labor Day barbecue to remember a college student who died in a car crash last month.
A large crowd showed up at Five Island Park for the cookout in remembrance of Justin Miceli, who died when he was just 19. Mourners released a basket of butterflies, one of which landed on Miceli's 4-year-old brother.
Butterflies came to represent the Iona College student after a friend found a dead butterfly at the I-95 accident scene. In the following days, butterflies appeared near the teen's family and friends.
State police say Miceli was speeding on the interstate when he veered across the road, crashed into a guardrail and was ejected from his car. He later died from his injuries. While questions remain over whether alcohol played a role in the fatal crash, Miceli's memory was the only concern Monday.
One of the teen's great loves was his red Ford Mustang. His friends shined it up and his mother drove it to the barbecue. They plan to finish the work on the car in Miceli's memory.
