A New Rochelle kindergartener is the latest person to battle a potentially deadly strain of staph infection, officials confirmed Monday.
The city's medical director said the girl is recovering from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.
Officials said the child had lesions on parts of her body that were covered by clothing, so the flesh-eating infection went undetected as she attended class at Trinity Elementary School.
More than 800 kindergarten through fifth-grade children go to the school. Parents received letters at dismissal Monday with tips on how to prevent infection.
"I'm concerned," said Janet Rice. "I care about my children's health and safety. I'm a little worried."
Officials say the girl's mother notified the district about the MRSA case. The school is scheduled to open again Tuesday after a thorough cleaning. The girl is expected to be released from a hospital sometime this week.
