A 2001 Ketcham High School graduate is asking the Wappingers Central School District to change the mascot.
Yvonne Gor is one of the former students who helped organize one of two petitions that has garnered nearly 4,000 signatures combined.
Gor believes using Indians as a team name perpetuates harmful stereotypes and says that “it’s due time for it be changed.”
Ketcham High School 2012 alumni Zachary Cox calls the situation "a bastardization of a culture." Cox went on to further say "In order to honor Native Americans who lived in that area… a mascot is not the right way to do it."
The Wappingers Central School District superintendent tells News 12 they have received emails and letters supporting and condemning the mascot. The issue is on the Board of Education’s agenda for their meeting scheduled on July 20.
The Nyack Union Free School District also experienced controversy after a petition surfaced calling for the “Indians” moniker to be removed at the high school.
The Nyack Union Free School District Superintendent told News 12 that the Board of Education is constructing a framework to discuss the team’s name, saying in part, “The District has made a strong commitment to stand against all acts of racism."
Meanwhile, John Jay High School replaced their former Indians name with Wolves after ditching the mascot last year.
