A jury awarded a former Mount Vernon High School student a multimillion-dollar settlement for sexual and physical assault.
The jury awarded the former special-needs student $28 million on Friday.
Her lawyers say the district was negligent during the 2011-2012 school year, when it allowed the then-14-year-old student to walk off school campus unaccompanied. The girl was raped by an unidentified boy.
Her lawyers say the girl was also physically bullied when she returned to school after the assault. Cellphone video captured her being attacked in the girls locker room.
In a statement, the Mount Vernon School District says it disagrees with the jury's verdict and is now considering its options.
The victim's lawyers say because of her mental limitations, she wasn't able to identify her attacker, which is part of the reason he was never caught.
