Jurors hear from victim's brother at teen stabbing trial
The trial of a 17-year-old accused in the stabbing death of a 16-year-old girl resumed Wednesday with jurors hearing from the victim?s brother.
Krystle Fernandez is charged with second-degree manslaughter and weapons possession in the stabbing death of Elsa Camacho in September 2006.
On Wednesday, jurors heard testimony from Camacho?s brother who says he overheard a telephone argument between Fernandez and another woman. They also heard from a paramedic who treated Camacho after her stabbing. Police say Camacho had been recruited by a 28-year-old woman who thought Fernandez was having a relationship with her 16-year-old boyfriend. A fight occurred at a Cortlandt housing complex where the boy lived.
The defense contends Fernandez acted in self defense after being jumped by Camacho and three others, including the 28-year-old woman. Prosecutors are trying to prove their claim that Fernandez acted recklessly, stabbing Camacho a total of 12 times, including a fatal blow to her heart.
If convicted, Fernandez faces five to 15 years in prison. She is currently free on bail.
