Members of the Jewish population in the Bronx are shocked and saddened Thursday after learning that the Israeli prime minister suffered a significant stroke.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon underwent hours of surgery to remove blood from his brain following a stroke. The 77-year-old premier was supposed to undergo heart surgery Thursday to repair a hole but instead was rushed to a hospital Wednesday.
Local Jewish community leaders say residents must come together and support Israel no matter what their political beliefs are.
Vice Premier Ehud Olmert has been named acting prime minister.
