Harris is the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican-born father.
Jamaican-born fashion designer Hope Wade says members of JAMCCAR, a Rockland nonprofit that advocates for the Jamaican community, couldn't be more thrilled with Harris' achievement.
"Great things come out of Jamaica. And we are so proud of her. She represents every 2-year-old to 114-year-old Jamaican Black woman," says Wade.
Wade is hopeful once concerns about COVID-19 are over, Harris will make another visit to her father's island home.
At the popular Jamaican restaurant Golden Krust in White Plains, Harris is also a source of pride for many customers and workers.
News 12 has been told Jamaicans make up a big part of the population in Rockland County, with many residing in Spring Valley and New City.
