Iona College students and President Dr. Joseph Nyre helped kick off the 2015 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on campus Friday.
As the students prepared to douse themselves with freezing water, Pat Quinn, the co-founder of the challenge, looked on.
Quinn, a Yonkers native and Iona alum, was diagnosed with ALS at age 30. He says the challenge has provided a lot of hope for people and he is pleased to see the tradition continuing for another year.
Last year, the ALS "Ice Bucket Challenge" raised more than $100 million in the U.S. alone, and more than $200 million worldwide.
ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease, affects the nervous system and weakens the muscles. There is currently no cure.
