Investigators comb Mt. Kisco cop cars in death case
? Bedford police investigators have impounded two Mt. Kisco police cruisers in connection with a Guatemalan man?s death. Based on the search of the two cruisers, at least three Mt. Kisco officers may have been involved with victim Rene Perez before his body was found. Those officers have been identified as Lt. Edward Dunnigan, Officer George Bubaris and Officer Edward Dwyer. None of them have been charged and it is not known how much contact they had with Perez or if they caused his death.Perez, a homeless, illegal immigrant, had a history of drinking problems and making repeated calls to police. He was found unconscious on the side of Byram Lake Road in Bedford on April 28. The 42-year-old died the next morning due to internal abdominal injures, according to the Westchester County Medical Examiner.
The acting Mount Kisco police chief spoke for the first time Monday about the death that has put a cloud of suspicion over the department.
Acting Chief Louis Terlizzi said, "The Mount Kisco Police Department is seeking the truth regarding Perez's death and will seek nothing less."
Authorities say just an hour before Perez was discovered, Mount Kisco police responded to a 911 call from Perez at a coin-operated laundry. The department says officers reported the incident closed "after determining Rene Perez did not have a police matter." The Westchester County Medical Examiner's office has declared the death a homicide.
The Westchester County forensics lab is now combing through the police cruisers as part of the investigation. Bedford police would not say how the two vehicles are connected.
AP wire reports contributed to this story.
