An investigation is underway after officials say a man with a knife was shot and killed by police in Orange County Saturday.
The incident began when two Warwick police officers were sent to a home on Wheeler Avenue for a domestic dispute Saturday at 3 p.m. Details on that dispute have not been released at this time.
According to police, when the officers arrived, a man approached them with a knife. They say the man was ordered to drop the weapon, but he did not comply and continued to approach them.
That is when one officer fired his weapon.
The suspect was pronounced dead at Saint Anthony's Community Hospital. His identity has not been released.
Officials say an administrative and criminal investigation will now begin to determine if the actions taken by the police officer were justified. This process can take 60 to 90 days.
Standard protocol requires the officer involved to be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues. The case will go before an Orange County grand jury.
