Intelligence Center links Westchester police agencies
Westchester County police departments have a new high-tech command center to help them share information and solve crimes.
Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore unveiled the Intelligence Center Wednesday. The $250,000 center, which was paid for with grants and asset forfeitures from criminals, is located in what used to be a basement homeless shelter.
All 43 county law enforcement agencies now have up-to-date information readily available at their fingertips. The center also allows the local departments to share intelligence with state and federal agencies.
"Intelligence-led police is really a mandate," says Bedford Police Department Chief Chris Menzel. "After 9/11, the public has an expectation that law enforcement is sharing information."
Yonkers Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett agrees and adds that the center will greatly improve local operations. "The people that sit at those desks in there will now be identifying patterns and problems and they'll be picking up the phone and calling Yonkers, calling Mount Vernon, calling New Rochelle, saying they've identified patterns and issues that maybe we haven't identified."
