Inmate's wife arrested in synthetic pot overdoses
Westchester officials are accusing the wife of an inmate of smuggling synthetic marijuana that sickened more than a dozen prisoners in the county jail.
County Executive Rob Astorino told News 12 that Ebony Strange, of Port Chester, has been arrested for allegedly smuggling the drug "K2" to her husband, Deron Strange.
Jail officials say they are considering changing visitation policies to stop contact between inmates and their visitors. Only a short while after Strange's arrest, officials say they stymied a separate attempt to bring heroin into the jail.
County officials say corrections officers seized 40 envelopes of white powder that appears to be heroin Thursday. They say an inmate and a recent visitor will be charged with felonies in the incident.
Astorino says he is now mulling whether to end the current visitation policy that allows contact between inmates and visitors. He says that even if the rules are changed, prisoners will still be allowed to discuss their cases with attorneys and hold private conversations with family members.
News 12 previously reported that more than a dozen men grew violently ill after they allegedly took "K2," one of several brand names for synthetic pot, on Sunday and Monday.
