The city’s Department of Environmental Protection is educating the public on how to get fire hydrants opened safely for these warm days.
Bronx residents usually open fire hydrants to cool off during hot weather, but often it is done illegally.
The program’s advocates are working with the agency through the city's Youth Employment Program. They say all that’s need is a spray cap.
The fire department will come and will replace regular cap with the spray cap which has six holes, making it work just like a sprinkler.
Those looking to use a hydrant must be 18 years or older with a valid ID.
