10h agoThe Hudson Valley Humane Society says that about a dozen cats living inside a Pearl River home in unsafe conditions have been voluntarily surrendered to them.
The Health Department found the home uninhabitable because the homeowner had not kept up with the care of the 13 cats, which created unhealthy conditions.
A notice from the Rockland County Health Department that dates back to May states the house on East Carrol Street is not safe to live in.
Neighbors also say they have been complaining about a smell there for years.
A county spokesperson says the woman who owns the home is in her 80s and suffered an injury, and as a result, has not returned back.
News 12 was told that the woman's son is still caring for the cats and wants to rehome them with help from local rescues.
The Hudson Valley Humane Society says that it plans to trap and remove the cats next week, then send them to a veterinarian.
