Police are searching for a suspect who robbed a local convenience store and made off with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise Saturday morning.
Investigators say the masked robber broke into Nick's Convenience Store on Route 303 in Tappan at around 3 a.m. by cracking the door from the bottom with tools and crawling inside.
The perpetrator stole close to $10,000 in cash, cigarettes and phone cards before taking off through the back door, police say.
When police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect had already left.
Customers of the convenience store, which is known in the area for many scratch-off and lotto ticket winners, were stunned to hear about the burglary.
?To see this type of thing happen in this community, it scares you,? says Jerry Norotsky, of Tappan, who frequently shops at Nick?s store.
The suspect was caught breaking into the store on several surveillance cameras, and police are hoping the video images will allow them to determine the identity of the robber.
