Hundreds of people gathered at Rye Beach Saturday to celebrate the Labor Day weekend, while still following safety guidelines.
Most can remember when a day at the beach meant sunscreen, swimsuits and sunshine. Since the pandemic, this list now includes social distancing and face masks as well.
Many Rye beachgoers agree that it is worth it to stay safe and follow these new rules than to have the beach closed and be unable to get out at all.
"I work remotely now, any opportunity I can get, to come out, social distancing myself from others, I'm gonna do to keep sane and get some fresh air," says Elsie Ndema, of the Bronx.
Mary Njie, of Croton-on-Hudson says, "I'm in school in Buffalo, I flew down, it was kind of different to fly with a mask on and taking proper precautions, but I wanted to have fun with my family."
Many residents say they want to make the most of this Labor Day weekend, even though it is unlike any other.
Barbara Sawicki, of White Plains, says, "We all need to make the best of it and try not to get sick. So, we do what we have to do."
Health and safety protocols are being followed by staffers and beachgoers alike.
