Officials in Orange and Ulster counties say there’s been an uptick in coronavirus-related internet and phone scams.
News 12 is told the scams claim to offer vaccines and at-home testing kits, as well as robocalls soliciting fake products for money or donations.
Due to the sudden rise, officials have created a task force dedicated to combating online and phone crimes.
In some cases, the callers are claiming to be the IRS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or World Health Organization.
“Somebody calls or purports to be able to help them, they’re jumping on it. And again – you have to be careful of who you’re dealing with,” says Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler.
Officials say people are better off avoiding giving out their personal information by computer or phone.
Anyone looking to report a suspected coronavirus scam can contact the Orange County District Attorney’s office at 845-291-2107.
