Hudson Valley heads home for the holiday
The holiday getaway is underway, and drivers spent the day dealing with slick roadways and low visibility.
More than 100 million people are expected to be traveling this Christmas weekend, including 5.8 million by air, according to AAA. Heightened terrorism alerts means most passengers will have to go through full-body scanners.
AAA also expects 90 million people on the road. To help ease traffic conditions, Gov. Andrew Cuomo opened up all the lanes on the New York State Thruway and suspended construction for the weekend.
While ice and snow haven't been a problem yet this season, wet and foggy roads were blamed for numerous accidents Thursday morning.
However, roads have since dried out and the fog has lifted, so driving conditions are much better.
Travelers tell News 12 they have mixed reactions to the warm weather. "It makes me sad, but I would rather get home in one piece than have ice. But I do like a white Christmas," says Ronnie Weber, of the Bronx.
Local and state police say they have increased the amount officers on the road looking for drunken drivers.
