Hudson Valley celebrates African culture as Kwanzaa kicks off around the world
Thursday marked the start of Kwanzaa around the globe.
The seven-day celebration was created in 1966 to celebrate African heritage.
Seven candles are lit each night of the weeklong holiday.
The candles represent the principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
