For those who are worried about people close to them becoming infected with the coronavirus, there is now an app that can help.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo unveiled the new COVID Alert NY app Thursday, which recognizes when someone else with the app is within 6 feet of a person for at least 10 minutes using Bluetooth technology. It's available on iPhone and Android.

When people with the app are within that distance, it exchanges a secure, random code to each phone - which both phones store in a contact list.

Tech expert Lance Ulanoff says if someone tests positive for COVID-19, they will ask if they want to share the information their phone has collected, so that people who were near them will know.

"They will not know that it was you that was infected," says Ulanoff. "They promise they're not going to release that information to the wider world. It's not going to be used for anything other than trying to help people through contact tracing."

While some Long Island residents thought it was a good idea, others thought it was a bit too much.

In addition to New York, Gov. Cuomo says the app also works in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
