Housing group serving homeless HV vets faces closure
A housing group that serves homeless veterans in the Hudson Valley is now facing closure after the Department of Veterans Affairs suddenly pulled its funding.
For years, Hudson Valley Housing in Poughkeepsie has helped hundreds of homeless veterans get back on their feet.
That goodwill may soon end now that Veteran Affairs pulled a $500,000 federal grant the group needs to operate.
"To receive news - in the manner that we did - that we only have two weeks to close the program, was devastating,” says Christa Hines, of Hudson River Housing.
Local officials, like Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney and Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus have pledged to help find other means of funding.
For now, the future of the organization is in limbo, with people searching for alternative emergency funding to stay open.
A representative for the VA said they understand the organization's disappointment, but that funds were chosen to go to other area groups that similarly serve veterans.
