A house fire Sunday morning in Ardsley leaves an elderly couple homeless.
Fire Chief Joe Cipollone says the couple had a lucky escape. The husband managed to drag his disabled wife through the house to the side doorway by the kitchen where the chief says he say the woman?s arm sticking out of the doorway. The chief was able to help the couple get out.
Fire officials say it appears a fire in the fireplace may have ignited a nearby couch and then spread rapidly through the house. Firefighter?s say this close call could have been avoided. The family had a smoke detector, but it was disconnected.
The elderly couple suffered smoke inhalation was taken to Dobbs Ferry Hospital.
