Doctors and nurses practiced how to treat Indian Point workers in the event of radiation contamination or injury during a special drill Thursday morning.
The scenario of the drill had a worker lose fingers in an accident. His hands were also contaminated with radiation. Doctors at Hudson Valley Medical Center worked in a special room built for such a hazardous situation. As part of the drill, the hospital staff began the decontamination process while also treating the injuries.
Dr. Ron Nutovits, who led the hospital's response, says the annual exercise helps train the staff in case something similar actually happened.
Workers at Indian Point say the drill gives them confidence that they'll get the treatment they need in the case of an emergency.
