Hopefuls ready for 3-person Mt. Vernon mayoral race
Mount Vernon mayoral candidates spent the days before Tuesday's election courting last-minute voters in what's become a three-person race.
Democrat Clinton Young, flanked by children, urged supporters to pull voting levers for him. "The city needs to have integrity restored to the mayor's office so there will be hope for young people," said Young, who won his party primary.
Incumbent Mayor Ernie Davis is staying in the race after losing the primary by a few hundred votes. His administration has been the target of several federal subpoenas as part of a probe into possible fraud and corruption at City Hall.
Davis is dismissing the probe. "The labels didn't define the housing we built, the labels didn't define ? us when we were changing all of the things we were changing over the years," Davis said.
Republican Janet Snyder is counting on the battle between Davis and Young to split undecided Democratic votes. "Everybody used to say that the election is over because of the primary," Snyder said. "Not this year. There's a three-way race."
