Westchester County Center played host to an annual basketball tournament to raise money for special needs children.
The free event was arranged by Backyard Sports Cares, an organization that supports at-risk youth and those with special needs. They help find them a place to play sports and engage in physical activity.
Leaders of the group say many kids don't have access to sports at a young age.
"I just find it criminal that kids don't have the resources to pay for it," said Paul Underwood, Executive Director of the group.
Former Mets start Doc Gooden was even on hand to give advice to the young athletes.
"I've been to the top of the mountain-- I've also been to the bottom of it," Gooden said. "I identify with a lot of what they are going through and let them know you can get back on top."
Children who participated in the event say it's a good way to burn off energy and gives them chances to do activities they aren’t used to.
