Hiker recovering after fall from Cortlandt trail
A hiker is recovering in the hospital after losing his footing and dropping nearly 30 feet off a trail near Bear Mountain Bridge in Cortlandt.
At around 6 a.m. Sunday, police say 46-year-old Thomas Javenes, of Stony Point, got into trouble high above the Hudson River on the blue trail of a peak known as Anthony's Nose. Another hiker spotted Javenes and called for help about three hours later.
New York State Park Police say the trail is dangerous and not sanctioned by the state park, and injuries on it are often life-threatening. They say Javenes was alone and made it about halfway before being injured. He reportedly told police that he had hiked the dangerous trail several times before.
Responders were able to use ropes to lower Javenes to safety. He was then extracted via helicopter.
Javenes suffered neck and back injuries, and was unable to move when rescued. He remains in serious condition at Westchester Medical Center.
