Highway reopens day after lumber yard fire
After being closed to traffic for almost 24 hours after a fire at a lumber yard, Kings Highway was reopened Friday afternoon.
Firefighters had returned today to the scene of the Warwick fire to douse hot spots amid a massive pile of rubble and wood. The smell of smoke still filled the air. The raging inferno started at around 5 p.m. Thursday and included minor explosions from vehicles at the site.
Chopper 12 was over the scene of the fire at Mid-State Lumber on Kings Highway. Firefighters from dozens of fire departments, including those in Rockland County and New Jersey, responded to the fire at the 20,000-square-foot lumber yard. No fire hydrants were nearby, making the job difficult for responders.
Several firefighters suffered injuries that weren't life threatening.
The fire destroyed an office complex, forklifts, trucks and more, but some stacks of wood weren't damaged because of the direction of the wind at the time of the fire. Officials say the fire started inside one of the warehouse buildings on the property.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but they don't believe that it is suspicious.
