Powerful storms hit Westchester and Hudson Valley, leaving fallen tree limbs and downed power lines in its path. Con Edison crews worked to restore power to thousands in Westchester. More than 3,000 customers were in the dark in Rockland and Orange counties as a result of high winds. William O?Schaefer Elementary School in Tappan had to dismiss kids early due to power problems.

One Yorktown family awoke early in the morning to find their house surrounded by downed wires after a broken tree branch pulled down power lines along Route 129. Some of the power lines fell in the Tompkins? driveway, where 13,000 volts of electricity burned a trench.

It took Con Ed workers about two hours to shut off the power to the downed line in the driveway. Throughout the morning, the ground continued to steam from the intense heat caused by the arching wire.

Utility crews worked to restore power throughout the area by the evening.
