City leaders says the number of participants in the 93rd annual Yonkers Marathon has quadrupled this year.

Last year, the race had only 35 competitors. This year, 150 have signed up for the 26.2-mile race – the second oldest marathon in the United States. At least 845 athletes have signed up to participate in other events, such as the half marathon and 5K races.

The first Yonkers Marathon was held Thanksgiving Day in 1907. It was and still is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

“It was always called the marathoner’s marathon, because Yonkers has so many hills,” says Mayor Mike Spano. “It's a tough track, but anybody who can run this track can win.”

The Yonkers Parks and Recreation Department attributes last year's low turnout to a change in the race dates from October to September.

Money raised goes directly back into the Parks and Recreation Department to be used for future races and events around the city. Deputy Commissioner Steve Sansone says the city expects to raise $32,000 during Sunday’s race.
