Hazmat crews scramble to clean up 1,000 gallons of gas in White Plains
Hazmat crews were scrambling to contain about 1,000 gallons of gasoline that spilled in downtown White Plains causing traffic problems Wednesday. The spill happened at South Lexington Avenue and Quarropas Street at around 7 a.m. Officials say a tanker truck was making a delivery to a Citgo station and accidentally overfilled hundreds of gallons of gas. Foam was laid down to smother the gasoline and limit the explosion risk. Crews were checking storm drains to make sure gas had not seeped in.Streets were closed in the area and traffic had to be diverted until the spill was completely cleaned up. However, new concerns were raised when some of the fuel reached the Bronx River. A team from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation along with a private contactor were busy laying booms and absorbent strips in the area where a sewer drain in White Plains meets the Bronx River.
