The village of Haverstraw is unveiling a piece of history Saturday.
The historic marker is in honor of the St. Thomas AME Zion Church founded in 1846.
The church was later relocated in 1906 following the village’s landslide.
News 12 is told the event will happen on the Clinton Street Corridor, which is also being renamed after the Haverstraw African American Connection.
"This is an honor for us to pay homage to our ancestors for all they've done and be able to recognize them because for 400 years their story lied dormant,” says Virginia Forleet, of the Haverstraw African American Connection. “No one ever spoke about slaves in New York and definitely not here in Haverstraw."
The event begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at 41 Clinton St.
