Two Haverstraw officials who have had a hard time communicating with their families in Puerto Rico are teaming up for a donation drive this weekend.
Deputy Town Supervisor Papo Cancel has been trying to reach his cousins who he has not spoken to since Hurricane Maria walloped the island as a Category 4 storm.
"I'm very concerned because we don't know what their needs are," says Cancel.
Cancel has been able to talk to a few family members in a different part of the island, but Haverstraw Councilman Hector Soto hasn't been able to reach any of his family, including his brothers and sisters.
"I wish I was there with my family and friends, the people of Puerto Rico," says Soto.
The two officials will be collecting donations at the Haverstraw Firehouse. They are hoping to load up on batteries, flashlights, cases of water, baby formula, diapers and other items.
The collection will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
