Protesters are hitting the streets of the Hudson Valley to demand action on gun control in response to the recent mass school shooting in Florida.
On Sunday, a group gathered outside the Westchester Republican County Committee offices in downtown White Plains. The protesters claim Republicans on the state and national level who support the NRA are blocking what they say are “common sense” gun laws. The event was organized by Democratic State Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer. "We have legislation that has to be passed in Washington, everyone needs to come together on this, this is basic to our democracy, safe schools and so we're here to make the message loud and clear," says Mayer.
Families in Tarrytown also voiced their concerns about gun violence in schools as a protest at Patriot's Park in Tarrytown this weekend. Adults are asking lawmakers to make it impossible for teenagers to buy guns, while students say they want to get an education without being afraid. "We should be able to go to school and get an education instead of not wanting to go to school and have fear of going there," says Sleepy Hollow High School student Kira Gleit.
More protests are planned. Several groups will gather outside Putnam County Courthouse at 5 p.m. today to ask what leaders are doing to protect children from gun violence.
