Developers on Tuesday held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new $85 million luxury apartment building in Mount Vernon.
The upscale housing is located at Broad Street West and Fleetwood Avenue. It will feature 24-hour concierge service and amenities such as a heated swimming pool. Retail space will be located below the apartments.
Rent will begin at $1,500 a month for a studio apartment and go up to $5,000 a month for a penthouse.
Some residents question the appropriateness of such a building in a working-class neighborhood, saying it should be moved to a place where people could actually afford it.
Developer Mark Alexander admits that while the building is not for everyone, they are looking for empty nesters and millennials who have a six-figure income.
Tenants are expected to move in by mid-2017.
