A World War II-era hand grenade was found inside a New City community center and dangerously near a preschool full of children Wednesday morning.
Clarkstown police say contractors found the grenade with the pin intact in a cabinet behind a wall when they were doing renovations to Street School Community Center off of Zukor Road just after 10 a.m.
No seniors were inside at the time, but a preschool is located at the other end of the building and was full of children. Officials had to evacuate the kids and put them on a mini transit bus.
The Rockland County Sheriff's Bomb Squad went into the building and removed the grenade.
Clarkstown police went back inside to do a sweep to make sure everything was all-clear before they let the preschool students return.
