Telecommuting and carpooling options resulted in special recognition Wednesday for Nokia's corporate White Plains office.
The company was one of several in Westchester ? including IBM, PepsiCo, New York Presbyterian Hospital, the town of Greenburgh and even a Chinese restaurant ? to receive Regional Commuter Choice Awards from County Executive Andy Spano.
The companies have been encouraging workers to commute together, cutting their gas costs and traffic congestion. The businesses are also saving the environment from emissions in the process.
Nokia took the top prize for going the extra mile. "We have onsite laundry for our employees ? we have onsite cafeteria. We have bike racks for people who want to bike in," said Melissa Zavecz, of Nokia.
The cell phone company cuts an estimated 450 trips each week for employees by also offering a free shuttle. Nokia even gives each worker a free laptop to encourage them to work from home.
