The eastbound span of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge did not open to traffic Saturday morning, amid safety concerns with the deconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
The decision was made after Gov. Andrew Cuomo presided over a ceremony Friday celebrating for the opening of the new span.
"Last night, as they were moving the traffic over to the new span, the contractor discovered a damaged, rusted structural member on the old bridge," says Gov. Cuomo.
Officials say there's a chance that the new span could be damaged if the Tappan Zee Bridge does collapse.
Democratic opponent Cynthia Nixon is calling for an investigation on the incident.
"Safety has to come above all else, and the governor needs to be fully transparent about what happened here," says Nixon.
Republican gubernatorial nominee Marc Molinaro says, "it's now clearer than ever that the bridge was opened to meet Gov. Cuomo's political timetable without regard to public safety."
Some Tarrytown residents say they don't necessarily think Gov. Cuomo is to blame, but they do think the project may have needed more time.
"They appear to have been very careful in the dismantling and the building of the project, so I assume that they will take due caution," says resident Craig Singer.
Gov. Cuomo's Press Secretary Dani Lever released a statement saying, "This is not an episode of Sex and the City, it's real life. The Mario M. Cuomo bridge is complete and ready for traffic and the action taken by TPZ Construction, given the potential issue on the old structure, was out of an abundance of caution and about public safety, not politics. Anyone trying to score political points off of it only underscores why they are unfit to serve."
