Gov. Cuomo proposes Thruway toll freeze
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday proposed to freeze toll hikes on the New York State Thruway until at least 2020.
The proposal is part of the governor's 2016 agenda, which he has been rolling out ahead of his State of the State address next week.
Cuomo wishes to halt toll increases while the state spends about $2 billion on multiple infrastructure projects around the state, including upgrading bridges and paving roads.
Drivers who frequently use the Thruway would also receive a break under the proposal. They would be given a tax credit for using an E-ZPass, which itself effectively cuts the cost of tolls in half.
The state Legislature will have to approve the measure before it becomes a reality.
